Special Interests:
|
Ive lived in Boulder since 1964 and I suppose you could call it my "special interest". I was director of long range planning for many years, as well as the citys director of energy and the environment. Im looking forward now to a four year stint on the city council. Alan was the deputy city attorney before retiring. (He also dated Hillary at Yale Law School but thats a whole other story)
For fun, Alan and I and several friends love long distance hiking. We have walked across England twice, walked around Mt Blanc, hiked the Dolomites from end to end, circled the Annapurna massif in Nepal and trekked to the Everest base camps. Weve done several less iconic walks in England, Scotland and Wales and enjoyed pretty much all of them.
My two wonderful granddaughters are a very special interest too. I wish they were closer but we try to see them in Portland or Boulder every month. They spend July in Boulder at our mountain cabin. For the past three years weve taken them on a spring break adventure. In 2007, Alan and I took them to New York for a week of site-seeing and shopping at the American Girl Doll store. Kipp graciously lent us his apartment for a part of our stay. We felt really lucky.

Highlights Since 1962:
|
What can one say about 45 years gone bya couple of years at Vassar College, a move to Colorado at age 20; two dear, adventurous, accomplished and talented children now approaching middle age; three interesting husbands each more compatible than the one before; a masters in city planning and a dream job in the city I love for 22 years; the scare of breast cancer and the serious inconvenience of a titanium ankle (the result of a ski injury); a collection or good friends refined and drawn closer over several decades; a long-lived mother (89) in Boulder and a long-lived father (92) in North Carolina; my sister and best friend Eloise living just 20 minutes away on a pretty lake; a passion for greyhounds, modern architecture, a latte a day, my red Mini Cooper and gardening in a difficult, arid environment; discovering a love of teaching in my late 50s and becoming quite dedicated to my students...

Memories:
|
Its remarkable to me how faint my memories of West Essex are. I remember the long, winding bus ride from Roseland, the physical isolation of the school. I also remember vividly the change from half time in an old school to full time in a shiny new school. It seems as though we all did a lot of after-school activities my favorites were the Model United Nations I wonder if it still goes onand working on our yearbook. I, of course, hold in my heart the memory of many good friends. Right before graduation, 8 or 10 of us spend a couple of days together in Wendy Solmssens parents cabin in Vermont. It was probably my first time on a real adventure with girl friends. To this day, I love getting away with bunches of women friends, probably re-living that great time decades ago!
Ed Knapp was my favorite teacher and weve written and staying in touch over the years. A couple of years ago, he and his wife were in Boulder and stayed in my mothers apartment, as she was out of town. We had a wonderful day of visiting here and there around Boulder. Id just started teaching at University of Colorado he came to one of my classes and then we talked for hours about teaching skills and poetry. It was fun to reminisce about West Essex from our different perspectives...
